IMMORTAL MYTHOLOGY
The origins of the immortals are unknown but we have a number of hypothesis for their origin.
One chronicle suggests they were part of an ancient civilisation prior to the Ice Age. If we contrast this account with the likes of Plato's Atlantis, this seems a plausible account.
Another chronicle suggests this ancient civilisation began on another planet, known as Zeist. Contrast this with theories from the likes of Von Daniken and Zecharia Sitchin who claim that our gods and titans were extra planetary invaders and this too seems possible.
Indeed some of the names of the ancient immortals seem to recall our gods and titans, for example Kronos, the Four Horsemen, Kane and Gilgamesh.
The ancient civilisation hypothesis involves a tyrant ruler known as Katana who may be compared to the mythological Kumarbi. In Hurrian mythology Kumarbi usurped Anu who would seem to be the stereotypical elder god such as Kronos or Odin. Represented by the raven or crow, Anu, Kronos and Odin represented "the end of time" and their names may be cognate with "chronology" and "annual". In mythology Kumarbi was fated to be defeated by Teshub, god of lightning, the decapitator whose symbol was the bull.
Interestingly as Kumarbi was defeated by Teshub, Katana was defeated by Connor Macleod, a decapitator who attracted lightning (the quickening) and whose symbol was the bull - the crest of the Clan Macleod. Furthermore depictions of Teshub's Japanese equivalent (Raiden the God of Thunder and Lightning) show him looking very like Connor Macleod.
The chronicle states that after the rebellion of Macleod (Teshub) and his mentor Ramirez rebelled against Katana (Kumarbi) they and other immortals were exiled to be re-incarnated throughout time, thus beginning the Game.
One account states that the Kurgan was sent as Katana's personal assassin and this ties in again with our mythological comparison. In Sumerian mythology, the son of Anu (our Kronos) was Enlil known by his title Lu Kurgal (lord of the mountain), the name Kurgal clearly has a common origin with Kurgan, a name which referred to the mountains, specifically burial mounds on the Steppes.
Therefore in the noted immortals Kronos, Katana, Connor and the Kurgan we see their mythological counterparts Anu, Kumarbi, Teshub and Enlil.
In another account, the world had fallen into chaos and immortals from different tribes began a quest for the Source. This was not the same as the Game, whereby the immortals fight for the Prize, but rather, a quest for a single place where the quickening power may have originated. If the ancient civilisation or "Zeist" referred to a now lost ancient civilisation - our Atlantis or Valhalla - then the world falling into chaos at the moment of the Source may equate to the end of the Ice Age and the Neolithic Age.
Two immortals made it to the Source which we believe was on an island in the Baltic, perhaps Saaremaa off the coast of Estonia. Interestingly Saaremaa has a place called the Kaali Crater caused by a meteorite which somewhat resembles the place of the Source. The two immortals fought the Ancient One Guarding the Source and one became condemned to be the new Guardian and the other cursed as the Elder.
From this point which we can perhaps date to about 10,000BC, we now enter the Neolithic Age. In this, the new stone age, as man was entering a time where not only was he developing agriculture but also better tools and weapons. In this age man was also worshipping animal based deities and villages would have a shaman.
Here we meet three ancient immortals in Neolithic Europe. Perhaps the oldest was Karniel, who was so old that language was a recently learned skill. Another was Emrys, later known as the Holy Man of the Gates of Paris and finally there was the Fire God Khordas who lived in what is now Scotland. The Game was likely uneventful in Neolithic times since metal weapons were not really used and man lived a nomadic existence, roaming wherever food and pastures took them. It is also at the end of the Neolithic period that Dilijan the Pain Eater was born.
The Game seems to have restarted in earnest in about 4000BC, a time when Sumeria became the Cradle of Civilisation. Here the first few Sumerians as they are depicted in the Bible and the Babylonian creation epics again remind us of some early immortals.
One theory for the beginning of the game was that so every 1,000 years an immortal would be chosen to be an Avatar to fight against the Zoroastrian demon Ahriman.
As we mentioned earlier in the chronicle we may compare Teshub to the Zeist incarnation of Connor, Kumarbi to Katana, Enlil to the Kurgan and Anu to Kronos, now we meet another, Enlil's brother Enki.
Unlike Enlil (the Kurgan) a deity who wanted to destroy mankind, Enki was a benevolent helper to man. He is the equivalent of the Greek Prometheus - a here lies the comparison. Prometheus may be compared to our Methos. Just as our Methos referred to himself as Adam, so did Enki send Adapa - the Biblical Adam - into the Garden of Eden, where he was joined by Cane - the Kane of our immortals.
Following the Sumerian pedigree given in the BIble we meet two of Adam's apparent descendants who were associated with the Methuselah Stone and lived for hundreds of years - they were Adam and Methuselah.
IMMORTAL ANCIENT HISTORY
Following the uncertain mythology of the Ancient Past, Zeist and the Source, we now finally come to a concrete date. That date is 3156BC - the date of birth of Methos. This immortal therefore is the oldest whose date of birth and first kill information we have.
In his early days Methos came across four immortals who were older than he. Their names were Menahem, Elijah, Joseph and the Pharoah Djer. It was not for around 156 years until Methos took his first head (although he would later claim that date was closer to 2400BC), soon after he became protege to the Pharoah Djer.
By around 2500BC there were many immortals and even a pitched battle between two armies consisting of mortal and immortals alike. On one side was the Neolithic savage Karniel and on the other was tribal leader Caspion, his mentor Bran and the elusive Dilijan among hundreds of others.
Dilijan led a band of followers which also included Silas, a giant brute, and they later killed a tribe headed by a pre-immortal Kronos (born to Nomads in the Trialeti area of what is now Georgia). The chief Kronos was killed by Silas, but when they finally met Kronos and Silas rebelled against Dilijan.
This led to the formation of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Death (Methos), War (Kronos), Pestilence (Silas) and Famine (Caspian). After the initial break-up of the Horsemen in around 2100BC Methos became friends with another Biblical immortal, Abraham.
Another immortal that we know in conventional mythology was Gilgamesh, a king of Uruk who led to the creation of the Watcher organisation after one of his beheadings was witnessed.
By this point, the Game had spread from the Cradle of Civilisation, and immortals are recorded as far afield as China, where Sun Tzu, another historically attested immortal was born in around 2400BC.
CLASSICAL IMMORTAL HISTORY
As we move into so-called Classical times (the flourish of civilisation in China and Greece) we now finally meet a cultured generation of immortals who documented their swordplay and abided by codes of honour, passing on the rules of the game to younger pupils, a trait that has lasted until the present day.
One example of this is the renowned Aganesthes of Tiryns born in around 2,000BC. His name may not be immediately recognisable but the names of his two most noted students may be - Graham Ashe (Tjanefer) and Rebecca Horne (Rivka). From this lineage we meet many notable immortals, since of course Ashe taught Ramirez; Ramirez taught Connor and Consonne; and Rebecca taught the likes of Amanda.
Not all teachers had such benevolent results however, take for example Saif-Al Rashid, a great Beduin swordsman who later became the teacher of the fearsome Kurgan.
In the years 2,000BC to 1,000BC, many notable immortals were born in Egypt - perhaps this is unsurprising since this was a centre of civilisation. These immortals include Raan Priest of Osiris and his student Nefertiri, Prince Khyan, the aforementioned Rebecca, and apparently Kane of whom one account states: "he was a phaorah who led his people down a dark path." Perhaps most notable of all however was Tak Ne, later Ramirez, who was born in 896BC. We wonder whether he chose the name Ramirez because out of all Spanish names, it sounded most Egyptian, similar to Rameses.
At the end of the millennium, around 1000BC travelled again through Egypt, Mesopotamia and Troy before reforming the Horsemen with Kronos, Caspian and Silas. Here they 'killed' Cassandra, a Beduin healer who would later become a powerful immortal. After the breakup of the Horsemen, Methos travelled to China where he studied under Sun Tzu and later knew Socrates, Mensius and later 1,000 years later Julius Caesar and Cleopatra.
THE CLAN MACLEOD
We now turn our attention to the village of Glenfinnan on the Shores of Loch Shiel, this tiny village was a hive of immortal activity from 1000 to 1620AD. In the 11th century a Celtic immortal warrior came to the clan and later became Colin Macleod which is curious since conventional history only places the founding of the clan in the 1200s. The next immortal to come by the Donan area was Cassandra, the witch of the Donan Woods.
In 1518, Connor Macleod was born. His actual birthdate may have been earlier however since his appearance certainly suggested he was older than 18 when he gained immortality in 1536. Another member of a Macleod sept in this village was Jacob Kell, adopted by the Clan priest father Rainey.
In 1536 the Macleods fought the Frasers and Connor was "killed" by the powerful ancient immortal the Kurgan. In the decades that followed he was trained by
In 1592, Duncan Macleod was born in Glenfinnan and when he was 12 met Cassandra who protected him from the immortal Roland Kantos.
In the 1620s Duncan was killed in battle becoming immortal and soon after the immortal Kanwulf invaded the clan village. Duncan was told of his destiny by the avatar hermit who fought Ahriman in 1000AD. Later Connor Macleod, now well trained in the martial arts, found his younger kinsman and their destinies became intertwined. The turn of the 20th century saw the Macleods join forces against one of the oldest ever immortals as Duncan was able to defeat Khordas, a neolithic immortal.
THE GATHERING
The Gathering begun in the New York area in 1995. Connor Macleod killed Osta Vasilek and Imaf Fasil and the Kurgan killed Yung Dol Kim and Sunda Kastagir. Finally the two victors met and Connor was able to defeat the Kurgan and claim a massive prize of his enemy's Quickening. This later became a Dark Quickening of sorts as the Kurgan's spirit tormented Connor.
After the initial New York Gathering, the Gathering accelerated again in 1992 right across the country as far west as Seacouver and before long it became apparent the Gathering was all around.
There were some notable encounters in this era as Duncan Macleod killed the likes of Slan Quince, the ancient immortal Grayson , whose former mentor Darius was killed by a group of Renegade Watchers.
In 1994 two ancient Egyptian immortals that had been entombed were freed - Kane in Japan and Nefertiri in Paris. Soon afterwards both Macleods revisited their Samurai training and Connor defeated Kane and Duncan defeated the likes of Nefertiri, Luther, Martin Hyde and fellow Kenjutsu master Michael Kent.
In 1995 Macleod allied with the oldest living immortal whose birthdate is documented, Methos and another extremely powerful immortal met his end, Antonio Kalas.
In the mid 1990s both Connor and Duncan returned to Glenfinnan, Connor to ready himself for fighting Kane and Duncan to fight Kanwulf the Viking.
Connor's location is uncertain after this point. Some accounts claim he was in a Sanctuary, protected from the Game, while others suggest he was working on an Ozone shield which would be raised in 1999. Did Connor create the Shield and 25 years later do battle with Katana with the help of a resurrected Ramirez before winning the prize and returning back to Earth's ancient past, liberating the civilisation from Katana and thus beginning a new timeline. This obviously seems far fetched at best so we will not dwell any further on this theory.
In 1996 Methos began a quest for the Methuselah Stone, once owned by Methuselah and Noah, in a bid to pass immortality to his girlfriend. At this time Duncan also fell victim to a Dark Quickening after recovering he was able to defeat some very powerful immortals including Roland Kantos and Haresh Clay who had slaid Graham Ashe, teacher of Ramirez.
Soon after the Game took another turn as the Four Horsemen were reunited. In the end Duncan, Methos and Cassandra were able to defeat Kronos, Silas and Caspian.
After claiming the Quickenings of two of the oldest immortals Caspian and Kronos, Duncan was then pitted against one of the greatest swordsmen, Consonne, a student of Ramirez. Again the Highlander claimed the victory.
The next two years are somewhat difficult to document. Duncan became the next Avatar in the battle against Ahriman, represented in physical form as Kronos, and after spending a year in hiding was able to defeat the demon. His own demons stayed with him however and tells of visiting another reality where he never existed. Soon afterwards Macleod and Methos left their residences in Seacouver and Paris and both moved to London while Amanda divided her time between Toronto and Paris.
In 2002, Connor Macleod emerged from the sanctuary and he and Duncan went up against Jacob Kell and his band of followers. Duncan took the Quickening of his kinsman and the two were able to defeat Kell, a man estimated to have claimed more kills than any other immortal. Thus in 2002, Duncan Macleod is thought to be the most powerful immortal in recorded history.
In 2008 Duncan claimed another notable victory, defeating the master swordsman Pieter Gatlin, and some very strange accounts state that around this time, the Kurgan and Connor were resurrected from the Quickening, with the Kurgan defeating his foe and Duncan once again claiming the ultimate quickening.
In 2012 there are varying accounts of immortal activity. One states that Methos has finally gained revenge on Dilijan, another tells of Macleod and Methos being caught up in an immortal 'fight club' in North Africa, and finally there is the quest for the Source.
Accounts state that Macleod, Methos and a group of others have crossed swords with the Guardian in order to enter into the Source, in an island in the Baltic. The world seems just as chaotic as it did at the start of the Game and once again we see Methos riding off on horseback and perhaps more importantly a Macleod seems to be fulfilling the prophesy of keeping the world from falling into complete darkness.
The origins of the immortals are unknown but we have a number of hypothesis for their origin.
One chronicle suggests they were part of an ancient civilisation prior to the Ice Age. If we contrast this account with the likes of Plato's Atlantis, this seems a plausible account.
